Israel is derailing its own success in Lebanon

When Israeli soldiers seized Beaufort Castle in southern Lebanon on Sunday, they probably did not reflect on how its craggy Crusader battlements once witnessed a disastrous confidence trick. More than eight centuries ago, Saladin, the Muslim Sultan, marched a Crusader enemy, Reynald of Sidon, up to the castle gate and told him to order the garrison to surrender.
