Gunfire and mortars rock Somali capital as president clings to power

Heavy gunfire and explosions echoed across Mogadishu as a political crisis over delayed elections spiralled into street-fighting between the army and opposition militia. Residents of the Somali capital fled their homes after clashes broke out on Wednesday and continued throughout the night in the city’s worst fighting in several years.
