In Bernburg, an east German riverside town about two hours’ drive south-west of Berlin, the state of Saxony-Anhalt is holding its biennial festival. The streets are lined with familiar festival trappings: live-music stages, street-food stalls and mini-marquees touting tourism, handicrafts and community groups.
